Who are we?

We are a group of over 100 people from Spain and Portugal dedicated to the study and conservation of various species of steppe birds. We come from a range of backgrounds:

Academic and scientific community

Environmental technical professionals

Nature and birdwatching enthusiasts

The main goal of GIAE is to contribute to the study and conservation of steppe birds through scientific knowledge. Its founding objectives are:

  • To serve as a scientific reference on issues affecting steppe bird species.
  • To promote collaboration and knowledge exchange among members and with society.
  • To cooperate with other organisations, providing a sound scientific and technical basis.
  • To ensure that all GIAE’s actions and activities are guided by rigorous scientific principles.

What are steppe birds?

Steppe birds are species that mainly inhabit vast dry farmlands, grasslands, and scrublands—open, flat areas with little or no tree cover. These birds are typically found in arid or semi-arid environments, where grasslands dominate and the climate is generally warm and dry, with sparse vegetation.

Most of these species nest on the ground, which makes them especially vulnerable to habitat changes. They have evolved specific adaptations to survive in these environments with limited vegetation and high exposure to sunlight.
